WHAT IS THAT HARD DRIVE NOISE?

To better understand why your hard drive is making noise it may help to understand the internal components of your hard drive. Inside every Hard Drive (except solid state drives) are disc like objects called platters, which magnetically store your data. A stem called a drive head reads from your platters’ magnetic coating and sends the data to your computer motherboard.

When you open a file/program on your computer, your drive head is configured to access certain segments of your platters to run/open the file. These segments of the platter are called sectors. A file is generally scattered randomly along free sectors, which means the drive head must work swiftly along numerous points.
The speeds in which the platters rotate and offer data to the motherboard are called revolutions per minute, or RPM. The humming/whirring sound you hear emitting from a healthy hard drive are the platters rotating.
After years of hard drive use, the mechanism that allows your platters to spin and drive heads to access your platters will start to wear. Your RPM capability will slow. Your hard drive will begin to sound a little different.

Between the incessant rotations, bad sectors within the platters fragmenting your drive and an overworked drive head the hard drive will eventually lose function. The grinding/beeping/licking noise you hear after years of use is the drive head moving aimlessly on the drive head and meeting the internal head stop. This indicates mechanical failure.
